When To Stain A New Deck

What condition is the wood on the deck? If it’s brand new pressure treated lumber it isn’t going to be ready. Give it a few months to weather and lose moisture before starting your project.

You’re also going to want to take into account the current weather in your area and consider which season of the year would be the best time to start work. Depending on the condition of your wood and the humidity in your area, you might want to consider waiting between 3-12 months before starting the project.

Make sure you clean your deck before starting. There may be crushed grain from the lumber mill if your deck is brand new, and older decks can have all kinds of accumulated dirt or wear and tear. Once you’ve used cleaning chemicals make sure you thoroughly rinse the deck with water, you don’t want cleaners to remain on your deck after they’ve served their initial purpose.

Types Of Stain For Your Deck

You can choose between solid color stains, semi-transparent stains, toners and clear sealers, depending on the look you want your deck to have. Solid color stains can cover up imperfections in the wood, while semitransparent stains add color as well as allowing the natural color to shine through. Toners and clear stains highlight the natural wood grain. All stains are going to enhance your deck’s durability. How Long Does It Take To Stain A Deck?
